Avoid Social Security Scams: A Retiree's Guide

By Gerard Ladalardo·Jun 29, 2026· 5 min read

Every year, thousands of retirees lose millions of dollars to Social Security scams. The FTC reports that imposter scams are now one of the top sources of fraud loss in America — and retirees are the primary target.

Red Flags

The SSA will never call to threaten you, demand immediate payment, ask for gift cards or wire transfers, or tell you your Social Security number has been 'suspended.' If you hear any of those phrases, hang up.

What to Do If You're Targeted

Report the call to oig.ssa.gov and to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Never give out your full SSN, bank info, or Medicare number to an unsolicited caller — even one who 'knows' your address or last 4 digits.
